The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has taken decisive action following a high-profile security lapse at the Ibara Medium Custodial Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The Officer-in-Charge of the facility, alongside two other principal officers, has been removed from their positions pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation.
This disciplinary measure stems from an incident involving a death row inmate who managed to gain unauthorized access to a mobile phone while in custody. The inmate subsequently used the device to broadcast a live stream on TikTok, drawing widespread attention to the security oversight.
In an official statement released by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Jane Osuji, it was confirmed that the directives came directly from the top leadership. The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, ordered the immediate redeployment of the officers involved to ensure the investigation remains unhindered.
The leadership emphasized that stepping these officers aside is a critical procedural step designed to guarantee total transparency and impartiality throughout the probe. By removing the primary supervisors from the facility, the investigative panel can thoroughly examine the circumstances without internal interference.
Addressing the fallout, the NCoS expressed grave concern over public reactions and media coverage generated by the viral video. The agency formally condemned the event as a severe breach of custodial security, noting that it directly violates the Nigerian Correctional Service Act of 2019, operational Standing Orders, and established governance protocols.
