The Kwara State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria has reaffirmed its non-partisan posture, declaring that it remains neutral and will not be involved in political endorsements or alignments ahead of upcoming elections.
The association stated that it has not endorsed any political party or candidate, distancing itself from any claim or impression suggesting otherwise.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Bishop STG Adewole, the body stressed that any reported endorsement or political alignment should not be associated with the association.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Christian Association of Nigeria, Kwara State Chapter, wishes to unequivocally state that such views, endorsements, or political alignments are purely personal opinions and positions of the individuals or groups involved and do not represent, reflect, or constitute the official position of CAN Kwara State,” the statement read.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Christian Association of Nigeria in Kwara explained that as an umbrella body for Christians across denominations, it does not belong to any political party nor participate in campaigning for candidates.
Bishop Adewole noted that the core responsibility of the association remains the promotion of peace, unity, justice, moral values, and harmonious coexistence among residents regardless of political, ethnic, or religious differences.
“In every political season, the role of CAN is clear and consistent: to pray for peaceful, free, fair, and credible elections; to encourage responsible civic participation among Christians and the general public; to provide spiritual and moral guidance rooted in truth, wisdom, and peace; to promote issue-based engagement rather than divisive political rhetoric or partisan sentiments,” he said.
He further emphasized that while the association recognizes the constitutional rights of citizens to freedom of association and political participation, such rights must not be misrepresented as the official position of CAN.
According to him, any individual, church group, or Christian organisation that expresses political support does so strictly in a personal capacity unless officially mandated by the leadership of the association.
Bishop Adewole also urged political actors, media organisations, and the public to verify information before attributing political statements or endorsements to the association.
He reaffirmed that the Kwara CAN remains committed to praying for leaders and candidates while continuing to stand for truth, justice, peace, and the overall unity and progress of Kwara State and Nigeria.
