Southern Governors Condemn Kwara Killings, Demand Justice for Woro, Nuku Victims

The Southern Governors’ Forum has expressed deep shock and grief over the deadly terrorist attack on communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, describing the incident as a barbaric assault on innocent Nigerians and a threat to the country’s unity.

Chairman of the forum and Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, in a condolence message issued on Saturday in Abeokuta, said the killing of scores of residents in Woro and Nuku villages was painful and unacceptable, noting that the victims were attacked while peacefully going about their daily activities.

Reports indicate that no fewer than 78 persons were killed during the attack, with several houses and shops razed, while some residents were abducted by the assailants, who are suspected to be Boko Haram affiliates.

Abiodun condemned the alleged targeting of villagers over their refusal to embrace Sharia law, stressing that such actions run contrary to the principles upon which Nigeria is founded.

“Nigeria is a secular state where every citizen is guaranteed freedom of religion and the right to live without fear,” the Ogun governor said.

He added that the violence must not be allowed to fester, calling on security agencies to move swiftly to track down those responsible and ensure they face the full weight of the law.

“On behalf of my colleagues in the Southern Governors’ Forum, I convey our heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Kwara State over this horrific and senseless attack,” Abiodun stated.

“This was a cold-blooded killing of innocent and law-abiding citizens. It is the height of wickedness and must be nipped in the bud.”

He urged security agencies to intensify their operations in the affected areas and beyond, warning that allowing the perpetrators to escape justice would only embolden criminal elements.

“They must be hunted down and brought to book. Nigerians deserve to live in peace, without the fear of terror or violence,” he said.

Abiodun also commiserated with Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq, as well as the families and friends of the victims, assuring them of the solidarity of southern governors at this difficult time.

“We stand with Governor AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq and the good people of Kwara State. Our prayers are with the families who lost loved ones, and we hope justice will be served while decisive steps are taken to bring an end to the killing of innocent citizens,” he added.
