NITDA Commends Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for Obeying Code of Practice.

TikTok, Microsoft, and Google are commended by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) for submitting the 2024 compliance report and for their ongoing adherence to the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries. The Code, which was released in collaboration with the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and NITDA, provides precise instructions for fostering online safety and controlling offensive content.

The compliance reports offer insightful information about how the platforms are attempting to address user safety issues in accordance with the community guidelines and the Code of Practice. The following are the salient features of the overall statistics for every platform:

  1. There were 754,629 (754,629) complaints against the company.
  2. Content removal of fifty-eight million, nine hundred nine thousand, one hundred twelve (58,909,112).
  3. In response to user appeals, 420,000, 439 (420,439) pieces of content were taken down and shared again.
  4. There were 13,597,057 closed and deactivated accounts, totaling 13,597,057,597.

These reports’ submission is a big step in creating a more secure and responsible online environment for Nigerian users. It also shows how dedicated the platforms are to making sure that everyone can access a safe and reliable online environment.

This accomplishment reinforces the commitment to online safety for Nigerians and reflects the Code of Practice’s requirements that big service platforms be registered in Nigeria and adhere to all applicable laws, including paying their taxes.
Although NITDA recognizes these admirable initiatives, we stress that creating a safer online environment calls for consistent cooperation and involvement from all parties involved. We are still dedicated to collaborating with regulatory partners, industry participants, and civil society to improve digital literacy, fortify user safety protocols, and foster trust and openness in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
