Coastal Highway Section Open: FG Test Lagos- Calabar Stretch

‎In a major step toward improving national connectivity and infrastructure, the Federal Government (FG) has temporarily opened a 30-kilometre completed section of the ambitious Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to traffic.
‎The Honorable Minister of Works, Sen. (Engr.) David Umahi, officially commissioned the stretch on Friday, December 12, 2025, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
‎ Focus and Impact
‎This initial 30km segment, which runs from Ahmadu Bello Way in Victoria Island to Eleko Village in Lekki, is designed to immediately ease severe traffic congestion, particularly in anticipation of the upcoming festive periods.
‎The entire 750-kilometre Coastal Highway, a flagship project under the Renewed Hope Agenda, is projected to transform Nigeria’s transportation and economic landscape. Minister Umahi highlighted its benefits, including:
‎ * Boosted Tourism Potential
‎ * Job Creation
‎ * Enhanced Regional Integration
‎ * Shoreline Protection
‎The road spans nine states (Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River) and promises a seamless, efficient transportation system that will reduce travel time and significantly increase connectivity along the West-East Coast. Project Scope and Timeline
‎The opened section, constructed by Hitech Construction Africa Limited, features a reinforced rigid pavement dual-carriage highway complete with necessary drainage, culverts, street lighting, and utility relocation.
‎The project is financed under the EPC+F (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction + Financing) model, with a total cost exceeding N1.067 Trillion.
‎The Managing Director of HITECH Construction, Engr. Dany Abboud, reassured the public that the entire 47.474-kilometre Phase 1 is expected to be completed before the end of the second quarter of 2026.
‎ Government Commitment and Support
‎Minister Umahi affirmed that the temporary opening is a “testament to the Federal Government’s commitment to delivering world-class infrastructure” and improving the living standards of Nigerians.
‎The project enjoys strong support from the National Assembly, with Sen. Barinada Mpigi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, pledging adequate appropriation and oversight for its timely completion. Legal issues concerning the project are being resolved, with the FG successfully winning or settling most of the 27 filed court cases.
‎Local leaders, including His Royal Majesty, Oba Abdul-Wasiu Omogbolahan, the Oniru of Iruland, thanked the President for the monumental infrastructure, describing the highway as a “game-changer” for the region. Motorists, however, were advised to exercise caution as construction work continues on adjacent parts of the alignment.
