A major transformation has taken place at Auchi College in Edo State following a large-scale reconstruction project executed by members of the Association of Great Achievers, Class of 1991, bringing renewed hope to students, staff and the host community.
The once-declining institution, which had reportedly suffered years of neglect and infrastructural decay, has now been restored to a modern standard, with stakeholders describing the intervention as a turning point in the school’s history.
At the commissioning ceremony held on Monday, the leader of the project and oil and gas entrepreneur, Mr Peter Omoh Dunia, said the initiative was driven by a deep sense of responsibility and gratitude to the institution that shaped their lives.
He noted that the condition of the school before the intervention was disturbing, prompting members of his set to take decisive action.
“Today is not just a ceremonial event for me, it is deeply personal. This school gave me more than education; it gave me discipline and direction,” he said.
Recalling his days as a student, Dunia added that the values instilled by the school contributed significantly to his success in life.
“We walked through these grounds as young boys with dreams. This institution was once a place of dignity and excellence, and we felt compelled to restore that legacy,” he stated.
He stressed that the project goes beyond physical structures, describing it as a symbol of appreciation and a commitment to future generations.
“In a time when government is burdened with numerous responsibilities, partnerships like this are critical. Our goal is not to replace government, but to support it in delivering quality education,” he added.
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, who commissioned the project, commended the alumni for what he described as a remarkable show of unity and commitment to community development.
“What we are witnessing today is not just the rebuilding of classrooms, but the restoration of hope and a bold investment in the future of our children,” the governor said.
He urged other alumni groups and well-meaning Nigerians to emulate the gesture, noting that sustainable development requires collective effort.
“Government cannot do it alone. This initiative clearly shows what can be achieved when citizens come together with a shared vision,” he said.
The governor also charged students of the college to take advantage of the improved learning environment by remaining disciplined and focused on their studies.
In her remarks, the Principal of the college, Mrs Adam Obetaru-Jato, expressed excitement over the facelift, describing it as a long-awaited intervention that would positively impact teaching and learning.
Former Edo State governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, and the Otaru of Auchi, Alhaji Aliru Momoh, also praised the alumni for restoring the institution’s lost glory, noting that the project would leave a lasting legacy.
The reconstruction project has been widely applauded by stakeholders, many of whom described it as a model for alumni-driven development in Nigeria’s education sector.
