Driving SME Growth: NITDA and TikTok Launch Digital Commerce Training

In a major push to deepen digital inclusion and spark economic growth, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has officially joined forces with global entertainment platform TikTok. The strategic partnership was unveiled during the launch of the TikTok Digital Commerce Labs Programme for SMEs in Lagos. This initiative aims to equip Nigerian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with the critical digital commerce skills, tools, and market opportunities required to thrive in a highly competitive global digital economy.
The high-profile event drew key stakeholders from the public sector, private industries, and entrepreneurship support organizations, all gathered to explore technology-driven pathways for business growth. Speaking on behalf of NITDA’s Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, the Director of Stakeholder Management and Partnerships, Dr. Aristotle Onumo, emphasized that digital commerce has evolved into one of the most potent drivers of economic inclusion. He noted that equipping businesses with digital literacy is no longer optional but essential for their survival.
The NITDA boss highlighted the stark reality facing the nation’s business landscape, pointing out that while Nigeria boasts millions of exceptionally hardworking and innovative entrepreneurs, a significant portion still lacks the digital capabilities needed to exploit online opportunities. He stressed that the future of commerce is digital, and that forward-thinking entrepreneurs who embrace technology are the ones who will ultimately scale their productivity, access larger markets, and build sustainable wealth.
To bridge this digital divide, Inuwa painting a vivid picture of modern business potential where a young entrepreneur with just a smartphone can shatter geographical boundaries to market products globally and build a recognizable brand. He affirmed that the government’s core responsibility is to ensure that every Nigerian entrepreneur, regardless of their location, is handed the digital tools and skills necessary to transition potential into tangible prosperity.
A centerpiece of the event was the announcement of the practical execution plan between NITDA and TikTok, which includes a committed initial investment of approximately US$20,000 from TikTok. This funding will kickstart a pilot Train-the-Trainer Programme, strategically leveraging NITDA’s existing Digital Literacy for All (DL4ALL) networks. The training is specially designed to penetrate remote and underserved communities, ensuring that grassroots entrepreneurs are not left behind in the digital race.
Commending TikTok for its active commitment to Nigeria’s economic empowerment, Inuwa explained that this collaboration perfectly aligns with NITDA’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0). He re-emphasized that technology must be viewed as a transformative platform for wealth creation rather than just a tool for entertainment, stating that innovation is at its most powerful when it empowers the least connected and transforms the lives of the underserved.
Industry stakeholders have widely praised the timely initiative as businesses rapidly shift online to find new markets. Ultimately, the TikTok Digital Commerce Labs Programme is poised to significantly strengthen SME capabilities and drive Nigeria’s overarching vision of becoming Africa’s leading digital economy—fostering an ecosystem where startups and traditional businesses alike can generate employment and contribute to national prosperity.
