President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reached out to Nigerian-British boxing star, Anthony Joshua, and his mother following a tragic road accident in Ogun State that left the former heavyweight champion injured and claimed the lives of two members of his entourage.
The President, who is currently outside the country, spoke directly with Joshua on the telephone to commiserate with him over the painful loss and to wish him a quick recovery.
“I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for him. He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital,” Tinubu said.
The President also held a separate conversation with Joshua’s mother, offering prayers and words of comfort during the difficult moment.
“I also spoke with AJ’s mother and prayed for her. She was very appreciative of my call,” he added.
Tinubu further disclosed that Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who was at the hospital with the boxer, assured him that everything possible was being done to ensure Joshua receives quality medical attention.
“I also spoke to Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was in the hospital with them. The Governor assured me that he will do everything possible to ensure AJ receives the best possible attention,” the President stated.
Earlier, Tinubu had expressed deep sympathy with the boxing icon in a message shared on his official X handle, describing Joshua as a national pride whose discipline and love for Nigeria have endeared him to millions.
“I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident. As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country,” the President said.
He called for unity and mutual support in moments of pain, while praying for Joshua’s speedy recovery and eternal rest for the departed.
“In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny. I pray for strength, wisdom, and grace for you during this painful period,” Tinubu added.
The accident reportedly occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
The message was conveyed in a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on December 29.
