Road Crash in Ogun: Anthony Joshua Hospitalised as Police Confirm Fatalities on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, has been hospitalised following a road traffic accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, the police have confirmed.

The incident occurred on Monday morning in the Makun area of the expressway, shortly before the Danco Filling Station and ahead of the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane.

Confirming the development, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Babaseyi Oluseyi, said the boxer was involved in a collision that left several occupants injured and claimed two lives at the scene.

“The Ogun State Police Command confirms a road accident today in front of Sinoma, before Danco, along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Anthony Joshua and other injured persons have been rushed to the hospital. Further updates will be communicated,” Oluseyi stated.

An eyewitness, Adeniyi Orojo, who was among the first responders, disclosed that the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua collided with a stationary truck. According to him, the vehicle was part of a two-car convoy, with Joshua’s security team following behind in another SUV.

“It was a Lexus and a Pajero SUV in the convoy. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him. There were four occupants in the Lexus that crashed,” Orojo said.

He explained that efforts were immediately made to rescue the victims before officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived at the scene.

“Other eyewitnesses and I started rescue efforts and flagged down vehicles for help. Unfortunately, the passenger beside the driver and the person sitting next to Joshua died on the spot, while Joshua sustained minor injuries,” he added.

Joshua, who is widely celebrated in Nigeria for his sporting achievements and Nigerian heritage, was taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical attention alongside other injured occupants.

The police have yet to release the identities of the deceased, as investigations into the cause of the accident continue.
