A team of firefighters from the Kwara State Fire Service came under attack on Friday while responding to a fire incident involving a Ministry of Environment bus at Adeta Roundabout in Ilorin.
The spokesperson for the fire service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, disclosed that the emergency crew was assaulted by a mob upon arrival at the scene, leading to the destruction of the windshield of their fire truck.
“Our men were unexpectedly attacked by a group of individuals, disrupting firefighting efforts and damaging our appliance,” the statement read. “Thankfully, no member of the crew sustained injuries.”
Condemning the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, described the assault as unacceptable and dangerous to public safety.
“This act of violence is a setback to emergency response efforts,” he said. “We call on all citizens to support the work of firefighters and allow them to carry out their duties without fear.”
He reassured the public of the fire service’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property and appealed for better cooperation from residents during emergencies.
