The Kwara State Government has inaugurated a high-powered committee to chart a roadmap for the smooth co-existence of the Kwara State College of Education (COED), Ilorin, and the newly established Kwara State University of Education (KWASUED).
The inauguration, which held at the Ministry of Tertiary Education in Ilorin, was presided over by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo Kawu, who said the move reflects Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s vision of building Kwara into a hub of academic excellence.
She explained that the committee was carefully drawn from both institutions and key stakeholders to promote inclusiveness in decision-making. According to her, “KWASUED will, for now, continue to operate from the premises of the College of Education until a permanent site is provided by government. What is important is ensuring that the academic programmes of both institutions do not clash or negatively affect one another.”
The Commissioner praised Governor AbdulRazaq for prioritising education reforms, noting that the new university is part of broader efforts to expand learning opportunities and strengthen the State’s tertiary education system.
Chairman of the committee, Alhaji AbdulRahman Tunde Sidiq, a former Permanent Secretary in the State, pledged that the team would discharge its mandate with fairness and professionalism. “We fully understand the weight of the assignment before us. We shall listen, consult widely, and ensure our recommendations are practical and forward-looking, in line with government’s vision for an integrated education system,” he assured.
The committee, which has three weeks to submit its report, is tasked with recommending strategies for facility sharing, preventing overlaps in academic roles, and addressing challenges that may arise in the transition process between the two institutions.
Members of the committee include representatives from both COED and KWASUED, as well as officials from the Ministry of Justice, the SSG’s office, and academic unions.
