Ishola Launches Youth in Politics Initiative, Urges Young Nigerians to Redefine Leadership

As Nigeria marked its 65th Independence anniversary, Ambassador Rafiu Ishola has unveiled the Youth in Politics Initiative (YIPI), a platform designed to awaken young Nigerians to active political participation and nation-building.

Speaking on the significance of October 1, Ishola described Independence Day as more than a celebration of freedom from colonial rule but a moment of reflection on Nigeria’s journey and the urgent need for a new direction.

“The story of our independence is one of sacrifice and vision. But sixty-five years after, our nation still grapples with corruption, insecurity, economic hardship, and a crisis of leadership,” he said. “These realities demand a new generation of leaders who are innovative, patriotic, and accountable.”

Ishola stressed that YIPI seeks to move Nigerian youths from the margins of politics to the center of decision-making, pointing out that with young people making up over 60 percent of the country’s population, their role in governance cannot be overlooked.

“Independence must mean more than freedom from colonialism; it must mean freedom from poverty, exclusion, and misrule. Through YIPI, we are raising a movement of enlightened, empowered, and courageous youths who will no longer be pawns in politics, but thinkers, builders, and leaders,” he noted.

He called on Nigerian youths to rise above division and apathy, and instead unite for a nation where politics is guided by principles and leadership is about service. Ishola also extended an invitation to government, civil society, and development partners to collaborate in nurturing a new crop of leaders for Nigeria’s future.

“Nigeria is a nation of great promise. Together, we can make her truly independent—independent in thought, independent in innovation, and independent in prosperity,” he concluded.
