FG Injects ₦631.3 Billion into 9 Major National Road Projects

In a major step toward advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved ₦631.3 billion for nine key road infrastructure projects nationwide. Disclosed by the Honourable Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Umahi, following a council meeting chaired by the President, this significant financial allocation underscores the Federal Government’s dedication to closing critical infrastructure gaps and unlocking the nation’s full economic potential.

Road infrastructure serves as a vital catalyst for economic growth, national integration, and long-term development across Nigeria. A well-connected road network plays a fundamental role in linking communities, facilitating regional and interstate trade, and improving access to key markets. By simplifying the movement of agricultural produce, industrial supplies, and everyday commuters, quality roads stimulate private-sector investment, lower transport overheads, and generate widespread employment opportunities.

The approved funding encompasses a strategic mix of new construction, emergency remedial works, and targeted rehabilitation across multiple states. Major projects targeted by the Council include the 81.1-kilometre Ado–Ilawe–Ilumaba–Ikole Road in Ekiti State, the 95-kilometre Etuke–Okene–Ankpa–Otopa Road in Kogi State, and the Bichi Ring Road in Kano State, alongside key road interventions in Adamawa and Taraba States, the Sokoto–Illela Road, and critical sections of the East-West Road.

These widespread interventions are designed to yield immediate, multi-sectoral benefits by strengthening the backbones of local economies. By enhancing access to agricultural hubs, commercial centres, and social amenities, the improved transport links will boost local trade, support food security, and enhance the overall standard of living for residents in the affected communities.

Providing a progress report on existing national corridors, Minister Umahi revealed that the initial 118-kilometre sections of the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano Expressway are now complete, with the remaining stretches nearing final completion. The newly finished portions feature durable asphaltic and concrete pavements, fully outfitted with modern solar-powered street lighting to improve night-time visibility and safety for motorists along this critical economic artery.

Beyond physical asphalt and concrete, robust transport corridors act as vital economic assets that bolster overall national productivity and supply chain resilience. Upgraded transit routes allow agricultural producers to drastically reduce post-harvest losses, help enterprises streamline supply distribution, and make essential healthcare and educational facilities more accessible to the public.

As the Federal Government continues its ambitious infrastructure expansion under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the emphasis remains firmly on timely execution, strict quality assurance, and transparency. The Federal Ministry of Works has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining rigorous standards to ensure these substantial financial investments deliver durable, high-quality road networks that drive sustained prosperity for all Nigerians.
