Audu Ogbeh: Nigeria Loses Elder Statesman and Advocate for Agricultural Reform at 78

Nigeria is mourning the death of former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, who passed away peacefully on Saturday, 9 August 2025, at the age of 78.

In a statement issued by the family, Ogbeh was described as “a beloved husband, father and grandfather” whose life was defined by “integrity, service, and dedication to our nation and community.” The family said his passing marks the end of an era for a man whose work touched countless lives and inspired many.

Audu Ogbeh, who also served as National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was widely respected for his honesty, courage, and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s agricultural development. Known for his forthright views, he championed policies that promoted food security and rural empowerment, earning him a reputation as a bold reformist in government.

While funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, the Ogbeh family has requested privacy during the mourning period. Tributes are already pouring in from political leaders, farmers, and Nigerians across the country, many recalling his tireless efforts to improve the lives of rural communities.

As one associate put it, “Chief Ogbeh was more than a politician; he was a patriot who believed in the dignity of honest work and the power of agriculture to transform lives.”
