Residents of Danialu Alapata Compound in the Gaa Akabi area of Ilorin were thrown into panic in the early hours of Saturday after a fire outbreak gutted parts of a residential building, destroying two rooms before it was brought under control by emergency responders.
The incident, which occurred at about 2:11 a.m., affected a six-room bungalow, with flames ravaging sections of the apartment and threatening to spread to adjoining structures.
According to a statement issued in Ilorin by the Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, firefighters responded promptly to a distress call and acted swiftly to contain the blaze.
“Our operatives arrived on time and were able to confine the fire to the affected rooms, thereby preventing further destruction to other parts of the building and neighbouring properties,” the statement said.
Preliminary findings by the fire service indicated that the incident was triggered by a power surge, which ignited combustible materials within the affected rooms.
Reacting to the development, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, urged residents to take proactive safety measures to prevent similar occurrences.
He advised households to install surge protectors, avoid overloading electrical outlets, and ensure regular inspection of wiring systems by qualified technicians.
“It is also important to switch off electrical appliances when not in use, particularly during periods of unstable power supply,” he said, adding that early reporting of fire outbreaks remains critical to reducing damage.
The agency reaffirmed its readiness to continue safeguarding lives and property across the state through rapid response and public safety awareness.
