NESREA SANCTIONS 21 FACILITIES FOR NON-COMPLIANCE WITH ENVIRONMENTAL LAW.

21 facilities in the Federal Capital Territory were shut down by the National Environmental Standards and Regulation Enforcement Agency (NESREA) on Wednesday for violating current environmental regulations.

Ochacho Real Homes Limited, Idu; the Cosgrove Shopping Mall Project, Wuse II; Belmont Court, Idu; and eighteen other facilities and projects were among those that were sealed.

Speaking to the media, NESREA Director General Prof. Innocent Barikor explained that the enforcement action was taken to stop the facilities’ operations from having a negative environmental impact.

“The host communities where these facilities are located have expressed public outrage over the detrimental effects of the construction and quarrying activities within FCT. Additionally, the environment is vulnerable to a number of environmental disasters and degradations, including burrow pits, erosion, and flooding.

Additionally, Prof. Barikor said, “The construction industry has persisted in disregarding the Environmental Impacts Assessment Act and the National Environmental (Construction Sector) Regulations 2011 provisions. Following an investigation into numerous public complaints against these facilities, NESREA officials issued notices of compliance concerns to the facilities. However, they disregarded the environmental laws’ provisions, which is why the Agency took action.

As required by law, he continued, many of the facilities did not conduct Environmental Impact Assessments prior to the start of their projects.
