The Oro community in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State witnessed a historic and colorful celebration as His Royal Majesty, Oba Joel Olaniyi Oyatoye Titiloye Olufayo II, was officially crowned as the new Oloro of Oro Kingdom.
The coronation ceremony, marking the return of Oba Oyatoye’s lineage to the throne after 234 years, was steeped in tradition, with rites performed by the Oloro-in-Council.
The event drew a host of dignitaries, including representatives of Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the Turaki of Ilorin and Senator representing Kwara Central, Mallam Saliu Mustapha, and Senator Lola Ashiru of Kwara South. Others present included Hon. Raheem Tunji Olawuyi Ajulopin, member representing Ekiti/Isin/Irepodun/Oke Ero Federal Constituency; the Executive Secretary of National Institutes of Cultural Orientation (NICO), Otunba Biodun Ajiboye; and prominent figures from Oro Kingdom like Retired Rear Admiral Azeez Bayo Afolayan and Alhaji Yinka Quadri.
Traditional rulers from across Igbomina land, led by the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo and Chairman of Irepodun Traditional Council, Oba Ismail Yahyah Alebiosu, were also in attendance.
In a message delivered by his Special Adviser on Political Matters, Hon. Femi Agbaje Whyte, Governor AbdulRazaq urged Oba Oyatoye to lead with fairness and compassion, emphasizing the importance of unity and cultural preservation. The governor pledged continued government support for traditional institutions and development in Oro Kingdom.
“The ascension of Oba Joel Oyatoye is a call to service and preservation of our shared heritage. Our administration remains committed to supporting the growth of traditional institutions and fostering regional progress,” Governor AbdulRazaq stated.
Oba Alebiosu lauded the state government for facilitating a seamless selection process, while urging the people of Oro Kingdom to unite behind their new monarch.
“The Kabiyesi has settled on the throne with divine support. He should open his doors and study the complexities of Oro Kingdom carefully,” Oba Alebiosu advised.
Otunba Biodun Ajiboye highlighted the cultural importance of the coronation in preserving Nigeria’s rich heritage, while Dr. Thomas Adewumi, founder of Thomas Adewumi University, praised Oro Kingdom for its resilience and dedication to economic progress.
“Oro Kingdom has long been a hub of industriousness and development. Our people are united in prioritizing growth and equity,” Dr. Adewumi remarked, adding that plans for a tertiary health institution in Kwara South are underway in partnership with the state government.
The ceremony concluded with prayers for the reign of Oba Oyatoye, as stakeholders pledged their support to foster the unity and progress of Oro Kingdom.
