Tinubu Extends Audi’s Tenure, Tasks NSCDC To Deepen Internal Security Operations

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the reappointment of Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi as Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for another five-year term, reinforcing the administration’s resolve to strengthen internal security architecture.

The renewal of Audi’s appointment took effect from February 27, 2026, according to a statement issued on Saturday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Audi was first appointed to head the Corps in 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari. His initial tenure expired last Friday, coinciding with activities marking the 2026 World Civil Defence Day at the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja.

With the fresh mandate, President Tinubu charged the NSCDC boss to reposition the Corps to play a more decisive role in safeguarding critical national assets and supporting broader security operations across the country.

The President emphasised the need for the Corps to step up its responsibilities, particularly as the Nigeria Police refocus efforts on tackling banditry, kidnapping and terrorism nationwide.

Audi, who hails from Laminga in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, joined the NSCDC as a volunteer in November 1996. After completing his basic officer training in 1997, he was deployed to Obi Local Government Area of the state as a Divisional Officer.

Over the years, he served in various state commands before his promotion to the rank of Commandant in 2007 and subsequent deployment to the office of the Commandant-General at the national headquarters in Abuja.

An academic with strong credentials in public administration and law enforcement, Audi holds degrees from the College of Education, Akwanga; Ahmadu Bello University; the University of Calabar; and Nasarawa State University, Keffi.

Observers say the reappointment signals continuity in the Federal Government’s strategy to consolidate gains recorded by the Corps in the protection of critical infrastructure, anti-vandal operations and support to other security agencies.

Audi is expected to resume duties immediately under the renewed tenure.
