The National Population Commission (NPC) has called for increased investment in Nigerian youths through quality education, healthcare, employment opportunities and inclusive governance, describing the country’s youthful population as its greatest asset for sustainable national development.
The call was made during the 2026 World Population Day celebration held at Silver Gate Hotel, Ilorin, with the theme: “Realizing the Hopes and Aspirations of Young People – Today and for the Future.”
The event, organised by the NPC in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Kwara State Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, attracted government officials, development partners, youth representatives and students from Kwara State University (KWASU), Al-Hikmah University and the Kwara State School of Nursing, among other stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, the Federal Commissioner of the National Population Commission in Kwara State, Dr. Isiaka Alada Yahaya, said the future of Nigeria depends largely on deliberate investments in its young population.
According to him, “The theme underscores the need to empower young people through quality education, accessible healthcare, decent employment opportunities and meaningful participation in governance and decision-making processes.”
He noted that Nigeria’s growing youth population presents enormous opportunities for economic growth and national transformation if provided with the right support and enabling environment.
Dr. Alada added that investing in young people should not be viewed merely as a social responsibility but as a strategic investment that would secure the nation’s future prosperity.
He also appreciated the support of the UNFPA, the Kwara State Ministry of Planning and Economic Development and other stakeholders for their continued collaboration in advancing sustainable population and development initiatives.
Representatives of the UNFPA and the Kwara State Ministry of Planning and Economic Development reaffirmed their commitment to policies and programmes aimed at improving the health, education and overall well-being of young people.
They also stressed the need for evidence-based planning, reliable population data and stronger partnerships to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The celebration featured paper presentations and interactive sessions on youth empowerment, reproductive health, education, employment, leadership development and the importance of accurate population data in effective planning and policy formulation.
