Nigerian Army Intensifies Offensive in Kwara, Dislodges Bandits and Rescues Kidnap Victims

Troops of the 22 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army, in close coordination with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), have launched a major operation against terrorists in Kwara State, achieving significant victories across several local government areas between 23 and 29 January 2026.

Under the leadership of Major General Chinedu Nnebife, General Officer Commanding 2 Division Nigerian Army and Commander Sector 3, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, alongside Brigadier General Nicholas Rume, Commander of 22 Brigade, the troops carried out precision operations aimed at dismantling terrorist networks entrenched in forested enclaves.

During the offensive, troops conducted fighting patrols in notorious bandit hideouts, successfully neutralising one terrorist while others reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds. The army destroyed multiple camps and logistics bases, leaving the criminals dislodged and their operations severely disrupted. Garin Dandi in Ifelodun Local Government Area, a known bandit stronghold, was cleared, crippling their supply chains.

Troops also accessed remote, previously unreachable camps, destroying abandoned hideouts and logistics infrastructure, significantly weakening the terrorists’ operational capacity. Despite the challenging terrain, soldiers maintained a constant offensive, intercepting fleeing bandits at strategic points and arresting several suspects. Numerous kidnap victims were rescued during the operations.

Major General Nnebife acknowledged that bandits often receive intelligence support from collaborators in nearby communities, which enables their temporary escapes. He urged members of the public to provide timely and credible information to aid ongoing security operations.

“The successes recorded in these operations reflect the commitment and operational effectiveness of our troops in restoring peace to affected communities,” he said. “We call on residents to continue supporting security forces as we deal decisively with all terrorist networks in Kwara State.”

The operation, codenamed Operation Igbo Danu (Forest Flush), remains active as the Nigerian Army continues its mission to rid Kwara State of banditry and terrorism.
