Kogi Community Counts Costly Victory as 17 More Abducted Church Members Regain Freedom

Relief has spread across Aiyetoro Kiri in Bunu District of Kogi State following the release of 17 additional worshippers abducted from an ECWA church by suspected bandits.

The Aiyetoro Kiri Bunu Development Association said the latest release was achieved through joint efforts with the families of the victims after weeks of intense negotiations.

Confirming the development in Lokoja on Wednesday, the association’s National Publicity Secretary, Aledare Jide Sunday, described the process as emotionally and financially draining.

“This was not without painful parting with humongous resources,” Aledare said, hinting at the enormous sacrifices made by the community and affected families.

According to him, the freed worshippers were released in two phases, with three victims regaining freedom on Monday, January 12, 2026, while the remaining 14 were released on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.

The victims were among over 30 worshippers abducted on Sunday, December 14, 2025, when gunmen invaded the ECWA Church in Aiyetoro Kiri during a worship service.

Aledare recalled that earlier efforts led to the release of seven captives on January 1, 2026, though three of them were returned dead after what he described as “rigorous negotiations” and the payment of N15 million.

“The leadership of the community pressed further in their appeal and negotiations, which led to the release of three more people on January 12, and in a relentless effort, 14 others were freed the next day,” he said.

He noted that with the latest development, a total of 24 abducted worshippers have so far been accounted for.

“While the association continues to strive for the release of our people, it remains our prayer and hope that all those still in captivity will safely join us soon,” Aledare added.

The incident has renewed calls by residents for stronger security presence in rural communities across Kogi State, as cases of abduction continue to take a toll on lives and local economies.
