Abba Atiku, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has formally joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will secure a second term in office in the 2027 presidential election.
Abba made the declaration on Monday in Yola, Adamawa State, after collecting his APC membership card at Gwadabawa Ward in Yola North Local Government Area. He said his decision to pitch tent with the ruling party was driven by what he described as visible economic, human and infrastructural reforms under the Tinubu administration.
According to him, the performance of the president has convinced many Nigerians that the country is on the right path, adding that no opposition party has the capacity to stop Tinubu’s re-election bid.
“I want to make it very clear that nobody or any political party can stop President Bola Tinubu from returning to Aso Rock in 2027. Nigerians have seen his good work. He is not a tribalist and does not make appointments based on religion or region. His decisions are purely on merit,” Abba said.
He called on Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation, to rally behind the president to enable him to consolidate on what he termed ongoing reforms and development projects across the country.
“The president needs your support to continue with the good work. We should mobilise more people, even beyond party lines, to support our president,” he added.
Presenting Abba with his membership card, the APC Zonal Vice Chairman for Adamawa Central, Alhaji Isa Bagalti, said the move had further strengthened the ruling party ahead of the next general election.
“With this development, it is now clear that there is no political party or presidential candidate in Nigeria that can face President Tinubu in 2027,” Bagalti said.
Also speaking, a prominent APC leader in the state, Alhaji Jamil Yusuf, described President Tinubu as having no serious challenger ahead of the 2027 poll. He dismissed other potential aspirants as lacking the competence and credibility required to lead the country.
“Many of those claiming they want to contest see politics as a trade fair where people come to buy and sell. I advise such people to invest their money in profitable ventures. The office of the president is no longer for the highest bidder, but for competent people like President Tinubu,” Yusuf said.
Abba’s defection adds a new twist to the political dynamics within the Atiku family. While he has now aligned with the APC, his elder brother, Adamu Atiku, remains a key member of the Peoples Democratic Party and currently serves as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development under Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri.
Their father, Atiku Abubakar, is presently pursuing his presidential ambition on the platform of the African Democratic Congress, without any of his sons being members of the party.
