President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart Abuja on Saturday, June 28, 2025, for a diplomatic tour of Saint Lucia and Brazil as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s global partnerships, especially with the Caribbean and South American regions.
The president’s first stop will be Saint Lucia, where he is expected to engage key leaders of the island nation to advance South-South cooperation and renew Nigeria’s bond with Caribbean states. According to a statement from the presidency, the visit is a strategic step in Nigeria’s ongoing bid to foster deeper engagement with the African diaspora and expand its influence under the African Union’s Sixth Region initiative.
While in Saint Lucia, President Tinubu is scheduled to meet with Governor-General Cyril Errol Melchiades Charles and Prime Minister Philip Pierre. A major highlight of the visit will be his address to a special joint session of the Saint Lucian Senate and House of Assembly at the William Jefferson Clinton Ballroom in Gros Islet.
He will also host a high-level luncheon with the Heads of Government of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), where discussions will centre on economic partnerships, educational collaboration, and cultural exchange.
“We are entering a new era of engagement,” a presidential aide noted. “This visit represents President Tinubu’s vision of a stronger, more united Global South, driven by shared prosperity and mutual respect.”
Also on the agenda is a visit to the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College in Castries, where the Nigerian leader is expected to explore avenues for academic cooperation and exchange programmes that will benefit students from both nations.
The president’s next destination will be Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he will participate in the 17th BRICS Summit alongside leaders of emerging economies. The summit offers an opportunity for Nigeria to push its economic diplomacy goals and seek strategic alliances with member nations.
Nigeria and Saint Lucia are both members of international bodies such as the United Nations, and this visit is seen as a continuation of Tinubu’s drive to reposition Nigeria on the world stage through active diplomacy and southward outreach.
