Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the passing of Prof. Nuhu Yaqub, a distinguished academic and former Vice-Chancellor of Sokoto State University and the University of Abuja. Prof. Yaqub, who also chaired the Academic Advisory Board of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), died on Saturday.
Describing the loss as monumental, the Director-General of NILDS, Prof. Abubakar O. Sulaiman, paid glowing tribute to the late scholar, referring to him as “an accomplished academic and political scientist whose contributions to education and research have left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s intellectual development.”
“Prof. Yaqub’s death is both shocking and devastating. He was a pillar of knowledge whose dedication influenced countless students and policymakers. His demise comes at a time when his vast experience and wisdom would have been invaluable to the nation,” Prof. Sulaiman remarked.
The NILDS DG further emphasized the personal and collective loss felt by Kogi State, Prof. Yaqub’s state of origin, describing him as “an illustrious academic whose achievements brought pride to the state.”
Condolences have poured in from across the nation, including messages to his wife, children, and academic institutions that benefitted from his leadership. Prof. Sulaiman prayed for Allah to grant the deceased eternal rest in Aljanat Firdaus and to provide his family with the strength to bear the loss.
Prof. Nuhu Yaqub’s legacy as a transformative academic leader and his invaluable contributions to Nigeria’s educational sector will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.
