Professor Yusuf Ali Honoured as Ilorin Emirate’s Chief Legal Adviser

Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, was aglow on Friday as distinguished legal scholar, Professor Yusuf Ali (SAN), was honoured with the prestigious title of Kuliyan Ngeri—the Chief Legal Adviser of Ilorin Emirate—by the Emir, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari.

The colourful turbaning ceremony, held at the Emir’s Palace, drew Vice President Kashim Shettima and other prominent dignitaries from across Nigeria, in celebration of Professor Ali’s decades of service to the legal profession and unwavering commitment to the Ilorin Emirate.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq was represented by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Danladi-Salihu. Other notable attendees included Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum; Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN); Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola; and former Kano State Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau.

In his remarks, the Emir described the honour as well-earned, citing Professor Ali’s long-standing contributions to the development of Ilorin Emirate.

“You stood by us when things were tough,” the Emir stated. “For nearly two decades, you have used your intellect, resources, and influence to uplift the Ilorin Emirate. This honour reflects our deep appreciation.”

He added, “As our number one legal adviser, your legacy will be remembered for generations.”

An emotional Professor Yusuf Ali thanked the Emir and the Ilorin community for the recognition.

“I am deeply humbled by this honour and overwhelmed by the show of love from leaders across the country. I remain committed to serving Ilorin Emirate and the nation with all I have,” he said.

Also present were the Ciroma of Ilorin, Alhaji Abubakar Bature Sulu-Gambari; Mutawali of Ilorin, Dr. Alimi AbdulRazaq; Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Wahab Egbewole; Al-Hikmah University founder, Alhaji AbdulRaheem Oladimeji; and Mufti of Ilorin, Sheikh Faruq Onikijipa.

Legal luminaries including Salman Adelodun (SAN), Kehinde Eleja (SAN), former Grand Khadi of Kwara, Justice Idris Haroun, and Federal Permanent Secretary, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, also graced the occasion.

The turbaning not only recognises Professor Ali’s towering influence in law and education, but also celebrates his exemplary service and integrity. Many described him as a national icon whose impact stretches far beyond the legal profession.

“For the Vice President and such calibre of leaders to attend, it shows Professor Ali is a man of great value,” said Ilorin-based legal practitioner AbdulLateef Adebayo. “He’s a national asset.”

For the Ilorin Emirate and Nigeria at large, the honour bestowed on Professor Ali marks a celebration of character, service, and lifelong dedication to community and country.
