NANS Cautions Politicians Against Shielding Suspects in Attempted Assassination of Chief Benard Jagboro

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has raised alarm over alleged political interference in the ongoing investigation into the attempted assassination of its patron, Chief Benard Jagboro, in Okwokoko, Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State.

The student body commended the Nigeria Police Force for its swift response in apprehending suspects linked to the attack and recovering arms and ammunition during the operation. NANS described the police action as a demonstration of professionalism and commitment to justice.

However, the association expressed worry over reports that the transfer of the suspects to Abuja for further investigation and prosecution has been halted following the alleged intervention of an unnamed political figure and a serving Minister.

NANS National Financial Secretary, Comrade Jeremiah Ohomah, in a statement, said the association views such interference as a dangerous move that could derail justice and embolden criminal elements.

“We have credible information suggesting that some powerful individuals are trying to influence the course of justice in this matter. This is unacceptable and a direct affront to the rule of law,” Ohomah stated.

He warned that Nigerian students would not remain silent if those behind the attack on Chief Jagboro are shielded from accountability, stressing that justice must not be compromised.

“The student community will resist any attempt to protect those responsible for this heinous crime. The police must be allowed to do their job without fear or favour,” he added.

NANS called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure a transparent and thorough investigation into the case, insisting that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.
