Team Kwara recorded a notable leap in its performance at the 2024 National Sports Festival, finishing 14th on the medals table with 29 medals. The delegation clinched 6 gold, 11 silver, and 12 bronze medals at the event hosted by Ogun State and tagged “Gateway Games.”
This year’s result marks a steady improvement from the 2022 edition, where the state came 18th with 4 gold, 8 silver, and 37 bronze medals. Though the overall number of medals was fewer this time, Kwara showed better quality by winning more gold and silver.
Key contributors to the state’s success included athletes like Rofiat Azeez, Blessing Isaac, Ahmed Abdullahi, Kudirat Imam Fulani, and Aiyelabegan Shukurat, who excelled in sports such as squash, table tennis, badminton, and wushu kungfu.
Speaking on the team’s performance, the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Mallam Bola Mogaji, described the outing as a reflection of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s investment in grassroots sports.
“Our improved position on the medals table is not a fluke. It is the result of deliberate planning, support, and the Governor’s strong commitment to youth and sports development,” Mogaji said.
He also applauded the athletes and officials for showing resilience and discipline during the two-week competition, assuring that Kwara’s sports sector would continue to experience positive growth.
Delta State once again topped the overall medals table with 337 medals, followed by the host, Ogun State, with 235 medals, and Bayelsa in third place with 228 medals.
