The Vice-Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Okada, Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, has again emphasised the critical role of education in driving Nigeria’s economic transformation.
Speaking on Friday in Okada, Edo State, during the 23rd Convocation Lecture of the institution, Prof. Ezemonye described education as the most reliable pathway to innovation, productivity, and sustainable national prosperity.
He noted that Nigeria is currently undergoing profound economic changes, stressing that only a well-equipped, knowledge-driven workforce can sustain and accelerate the nation’s development goals.
Addressing the graduating students during the lecture titled “The Nexus Between Education and National Prosperity in a Transformative Economy,” the VC said the theme reflects the realities and challenges facing the country.
According to him, convocation lectures are not mere formalities but vital platforms for interrogating national issues and shaping forward-looking ideas.
“Convocation lectures serve as pivotal intellectual forums where we go beyond traditional learning to examine and reflect on the pressing issues of our time.
“The theme for this year’s lecture is timely and highly relevant. Nigeria is navigating a period of significant economic transformation, and the role of education in this process cannot be overstated.
“Contemporary research consistently shows that education is not just a social good—it is a powerful catalyst for economic prosperity and social progress,” he said.
Delivering the lecture, the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, described education as the key to unlocking opportunities for young Nigerians.
He stressed that education promotes social mobility, reduces inequality, and must be complemented with skills acquisition to keep graduates competitive in an evolving global economy.
Dr. Sununu commended Igbinedion University for integrating entrepreneurship into its undergraduate programmes, noting that the approach aligns with global best practices and better prepares students for the future of work.
He also renewed calls for increased investment in education as a national development priority.
