Former First Lady of Kwara State and founder of the LEAH Foundation, Dr (Mrs) Omolewa Ahmed, has appealed to Nigerian women to make their health a top priority by going for regular medical check-ups and cancer screening.
Speaking during a cancer awareness walk that began at the Kwara State Stadium and ended at Yidi Road, Ilorin, Mrs Ahmed emphasised that early detection remains the most effective way to fight cancer.
“Whatever happens to my family happens to me, so I’m coming out to represent my family and all my fans,” she said. “Tell your wives, sisters, and mothers to go out and check themselves. Early detection is affordable and gives a better chance of survival, or even total prevention.”
Mrs Ahmed, who recently partnered with the M.E.R.E Foundation to expand health awareness campaigns, said the initiative reflects her long-standing commitment to saving lives through education and timely medical action.
“What matters most in life is good health,” she stated. “Many people take their health for granted, but no amount of money can buy it back. We are advocating that everyone, especially women above 50, should go for regular check-ups and cancer screening.”
Pastor (Mrs) Olotu Bisola of Daughters of Deborah International Ministry, Ilorin, also shared a message of hope during the event, encouraging women to take responsibility for their health.
“My message is one of hope and declaration. A cancer diagnosis is not a death sentence, but you must act early,” she said. “We’re making a bold statement through this walk — present yourself early for screening so you can have a good chance of overcoming cancer.”
Nollywood actress Abiola Adebayo, who joined the walk, described the event as a timely reminder of the need for awareness and action.
“We all know how many people cancer is killing daily,” she said. “We must raise our voices to let people know that screening saves lives. Even if you have it, it’s not the end of the world. Cancer is treatable when detected early.”
Through the LEAH Foundation, Dr Omolewa Ahmed has continued to champion health advocacy and cancer awareness across Kwara State and Nigeria, inspiring women to take proactive steps toward a healthier future.
