Kwara Assembly Raises Alarm Over Insecurity, Urges Governor Abdulrazaq to Act Swiftly

The Kwara State House of Assembly has expressed deep concern over the growing wave of insecurity in parts of the state, particularly Baruten, Kaiama, and Oke-Ero Local Government Areas.

During Tuesday’s plenary session, held on April 29, 2025, the lawmakers called on Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to urgently strengthen the state’s security network to counter the increasing attacks by bandits, kidnappers, and other criminal elements.

Raising the matter under urgent public importance, Hon. Magaji Oba Abdulkadir (Ilorin Central) decried the recent surge in abductions and violent attacks in rural communities, warning that the situation posed a serious threat to peace, safety, and socio-economic stability across the state.

“Kwara is known as the State of Harmony, but criminals are now inflicting fear, taking lives, displacing residents, destroying farmlands, and worsening economic hardship,” Abdulkadir said. He specifically cited the abduction of the Director of Personnel Management and Director of Legal Services in Oke-Ero as a troubling sign of growing lawlessness.

While acknowledging Governor Abdulrazaq’s efforts — including his visit to affected communities and the recent provision of 150 motorcycles to support security operations — the lawmaker emphasized the need for more robust and sustained measures.

Several other lawmakers, including Hon. Bello Yinusa Oniboki (Afon), Hon. Mohammed Baba Salihu (Okuta/Yashikira), Hon. Arinola Fatima Lawal (Ilorin East), and Hon. Rukayat Shittu (Owode/Onire), backed the motion and echoed the call for swift and decisive intervention.

The House resolved to urge Governor Abdulrazaq to direct the State Security Council to:

Review and reinforce the security framework across all senatorial districts.

Deploy more security personnel and logistics to vulnerable communities.

Establish a Victim Support Fund for displaced persons and reconstruction of affected areas.

Launch a state-wide security awareness campaign in partnership with traditional rulers.

The session was adjourned following a motion by Hon. Magaji Oba Abdulkadir and seconded by Hon. Saba Yisa Gideon (Edu).
